How do People Celebrate The end of Ramadan?
As the crescent moon of Shawwal appears, the sacred month of Ramadan draws to a close. Eid ul-Fitr, the Festival of Breaking the Fast, is a day of immense joy, but its beauty lies in more than just the festivities. It is a day of spiritual victory, a "morning of prayer and gratitude" where we thank Allah for the strength to complete our fasts.
The practice of giving before the Eid prayer is not merely a tradition but a direct instruction from the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). Its significance is captured in a foundational narration:
Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنه) reported: "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ordained Zakat al-Fitr to purify the fasting person from indecent words or actions, and to provide food for the needy. It is accepted as Zakat for the person who gives it before the Eid prayer, and it is a sadaqah (voluntary charity) for the person who gives it after the prayer." (Abu Dawood)
This Hadith highlights that Fitrana is a dual-purpose act: it serves as a spiritual "cleanse" for our own worship while ensuring that the most vulnerable members of our global family are not forgotten on a day of celebration.
In Islam, celebration is inseparable from compassion. Before the community gathers for the Eid prayer, there is a final, vital obligation: Fitrana (Zakat al-Fitr).
Fitrana is a mechanism of social justice. It ensures that those in need can celebrate Eid with the same joy as the rest of the community. By providing the means for a meal, Fitrana ensures that on the day of Eid, no one goes hungry. Sharing our happiness with the less fortunate is the true essence of the day.
As a trusted British Muslim charity, Penny Appeal takes the responsibility of your Fitrana seriously. Our 2026 missions are focused on reaching families in the world's most volatile regions from Palestine and Yemen to Sudan and Pakistan; ensuring your gift transforms into tangible happiness.
Through our Fitrana projects, we deliver aid in three impactful ways to suit the needs of various communities:
Fitrana Food Packs For families in areas with severe food shortages, we deliver nutritious food parcels. These packs contain staple items like flour, rice, and oil, ensuring that thousands of vulnerable, Zakat-deserving families can prepare a wholesome Eid meal in their own homes.
Fitrana Cash Transfers In regions where local markets are functional but families lack the means to buy essentials, we provide direct cash assistance. This empowers parents to choose exactly what their children need be it specific ingredients for a traditional dish or urgent household supplies restoring their dignity and agency.
Fitrana Eid Gifts We believe every child deserves to smile on Eid. In crisis-hit countries, our teams distribute Eid gifts and treats to orphaned and displaced children. These small tokens of love bring a moment of normalcy and light to those who have endured the darkness of conflict and poverty.
At Penny Appeal, we operate with a commitment to transparency and accountability. We understand that Fitrana is a time-sensitive obligation. Our teams work tirelessly on the ground to distribute your donations before the Eid prayer, fulfilling the religious requirement and ensuring your aid arrives exactly when it is needed most.
The generosity of the British Muslim community has seen incredible results. Your donations have enabled us to deliver millions of meals and supported thousands of vulnerable families across the globe to eat with dignity during the blessed month of Ramadan. This collective effort ensures that while we break our fasts in comfort, our brothers and sisters in crisis-hit countries are not forgotten.
