Rabi’ al-Awwal: The Blessed Month of the Prophet (ﷺ)
What is Rabi’ al-Awwal?
Rabi’ al-Awwal is the third month of the Islamic calendar and holds special significance in the hearts of Muslims around the world. It is most well-known as the month in which the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) was born. His birth brought mercy, light, and guidance to the world, and this month is an opportunity to reflect on his character, his message, and the values he lived by.
The name "Rabi’ al-Awwal" translates to "the first spring" - a title that symbolises renewal, hope, and growth, both spiritually and within the community. For Muslims, this month is a time to reflect on the legacy of the Prophet and to embody his example of compassion, justice, and care for the most vulnerable members of society.
When is Rabi’ al-Awwal in 2025?
Rabi’ al-Awwal 1447 AH is expected to begin on Sunday 24 August 2025, based on lunar calendar estimates. The 12th of Rabi’ al-Awwal, which is widely observed as the date of the Prophet’(ﷺ) birth (commonly referred to as Mawlid), is expected to fall on Thursday 4 September 2025. The month is likely to conclude on Monday 22 September 2025.
As always, the exact dates may vary by one day depending on local moon sightings.
Why is Rabi’ al-Awwal Important?
The significance of Rabi’ al-Awwal extends beyond commemorating the Prophet’(ﷺ) birth. It is a time to reflect on his message and to revive the qualities he demonstrated throughout his life: kindness, humility, patience, and mercy.
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) was born an orphan. He experienced hardship and loss in his early years, yet he grew to become the most compassionate and caring of all people. His teachings placed special emphasis on caring for orphans and those in need.
H(ﷺ) once said:
"The one who cares for an orphan and myself will be together in Paradise like this,"
and he held his two fingers together to show how close they would be.
[Sahih al-Bukhari]
This hadith is a powerful reminder that caring for orphans is a noble, spiritually rewarding act, deeply rooted in the prophetic tradition.

- Safe shelter, clothing, and emotional support
Through your support, these children receive stability, dignity, and the chance to build a brighter future.
Why Sponsor During Rabi’ al-Awwal?
Sponsoring an orphan during Rabi’ al-Awwal is especially meaningful because it connects your act of charity directly to the life and teachings of the Prophet (ﷺ) . As someone who was himself an orphan, the Prophe(ﷺ) consistently encouraged others to care for orphaned children. By supporting a child in this sacred month, you are embodying the values he lived by.
This form of giving is not only spiritually significant but also qualifies as:
Zakat: Eligible for your annual zakat contribution
Sadaqah: A voluntary act of charity
Sadaqah Jariyah: An ongoing charity that continues to benefit both giver and recipient
When you become an OrphanKind sponsor, you will receive a welcome pack introducing you to the child you are helping. Throughout the sponsorship, you’ll receive regular updates about the child’s wellbeing, education, and progress.
You can be confident that your contribution is making a real and lasting difference.
