Let's Talk Qurbani!
What is Qurbani and why is it Significant?
In Simple terms, Qurbani is the tradition of sacrificing an animal during the festival of Eid al-Adha.
What is it about this spiritual act that is so significant in our faith?
This practice dates back to the days of the Prophet Ibrahim (AS), commemorating an experience he had which tested his obedience towards the Almighty. Ordered to sacrifice his own son, Ibrahim was prepared to do whatever it took to demonstrate his faith to Allah (SWT). But, Allah, (SWT) in his mercy, substituted Ibrahim’s (AS) son with a ram to be sacrificed instead. Upon first glance, this event, which is recounted in the Qur’an, is a testament of faith and a display of pure devotion, but in reality, today this tradition serves as so much more.
Why do we give Qurbani today?
As Muslims, we perform Qurbani not only to remember and commemorate the act of faith by the Prophet Ibrahim (AS), but also to mirror the obedience to Allah (SWT) that he showed. The act of giving Qurbani reflects our readiness to sacrifice our own desires in the way of Allah (SWT). The act of Qurbani also fosters a sense of community and is essentially an act of charity. The tradition goes that the meat gathered from the sacrificed animal is to be distributed into three parts: one part for the family who did the sacrifice, one part for their relatives and loved ones, and one part for the poor and needy who otherwise couldn’t afford to eat precious meat.
