Celebrating India Independence Day
Today is India Independence Day! This day holds deep historical significance worldwide and is a time not only for celebration, but also for reflection on a journey towards freedom. This year, as we commemorate the 76th anniversary of India’s independence, celebrating the spirit of generosity and compassion that runs through the heart of their nation. In this blog post, we’re throwing back to this year’s Qurbani campaign where our CEO visited the home of her ancestors to distribute precious meat to those less fortunate.
On this day in 1947, India emerged from centuries of colonial rule to claim its rightful place among the community of nations as an independent country. The day symbolises the culmination of years of struggle, sacrifice, and unwavering determination led by great leaders who envisioned a free and democratic India. As the flag is raised across the nation and across the world, it serves as a reminder of the unstoppable spirit of the Indian people.
Although India is famous for its natural wonders, artificial marvels, and national parks, it doesn’t come without its struggles; poverty, pollution, and unemployment are rife across the country. We’ve been working in India to help alleviate poverty for 14 years, with focus on providing £1 meals and building water wells to empower entire communities. Another avenue we explore to provide lifesaving aid to India is our annual Qurbani campaign. We’ve provided thousands of meals to for India since our founding but 2023 saw our CEO’s first ever Qurbani field trip. In June, Ridwana went out in the field, meeting local farmers, interacting with beneficiaries, and getting involved in all things Qurbani. We were thrilled to have helped an incredible 986,000 beneficiaries, providing 3,994,000 meals to struggling families across India. We are constantly reminded that compassion knows no boundaries.
This India Independence Day, let’s celebrate our cultural and religious beliefs, practice the act of sharing, and come together in our shared humanity. However you’re celebrating today, from our orange family here at Penny Appeal, happy India Independence Day!
