Penny Appeal aims to provide orphans and the children of poor families with access to education. In doing so, the lives of underprivileged children will be transformed. At the moment, the charity is starting small. It is working with one school in the Konsh Valley (District Mansehra, North West Pakistan) to provide a better education for the 130 children it supports. There are at least another 60 orphans – and dozens of children from poor families - in the close vicinity of the school who can’t afford to attend. The teachers are only part-qualified - some have no qualifications.

At best, the school can be described as a hut, although huts generally have four walls. The school is open to the elements: the sun beats in during summer, and the snow blows through it in winter. There is no heating, and no washing or toilet facilities. Even the journey to school can be a life-threatening hazard as the children have to cross an ice cold fast flowing river. However the children are helped across by a local volunteer who braves the icy waters on a daily basis.

Penny Appeal aims to:

• Support the improvement of school buildings, playgrounds, water and sanitation services, sports facilities, equipment, and salary of school staff.
• Recruit qualified, motivated teachers who can act as role models.
• Sponsor the full tuition fees for orphans attending the school, and half the tuition fees for students from poor families. Provide school uniform, text books and stationery items to the students who are unable to pay for it themselves.
